Reverse osmosis is an incredible technological innovation that provides freshwater from seawater in water-stressed regions around the world and is highly effective in industrial cleaning of polluted wastewater. It can also be a good solution for household water when conditions require it (for example, kidney failure). But in most cases, municipal water is safe to drink, and a quality activated carbon tap filter will provide fresh, delicious drinking water at a lower cost and with less water waste.
Bacteria have historically been a big problem in activated carbon and reverse osmosis (RO) filters. In fact, many tests have shown that filtered water for RO filters and RO jugs has more bacteria than unfiltered water. The solution to this is to use activated carbon impregnated with silver, but this is bad for the environment and can also cause some health problems.
Tappwater has chosen to use the highest quality silver-free activated carbon (Jacobi Aquasorb HS). We weighed the pros and cons of including bacterial inhibitors and found, based on testing, that it is not necessary. Faucet filters have an advantage in that the water passing through them has a relatively high pressure.
